Achilles Tendinitis

The Achilles tendon connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. We use this tendon to walk, run and jump. Achilles tendinitis is an injury of the Achilles tendon when it is strained.

Achilles tendinitis is common in athletes or runners who overly exert and strain themselves; and it is also common in older people who play sports occasionally or infrequently.

Most cases of Achilles tendinitis can be treated with simple, at-home remedies, under your podiatrists direction, ranging from rest, exercise, targeted stretching to anti-inflammatory medication. Your podiatrist may also recommend special insoles and heel pads, that take tension off your Achilles tendon.

Serious cases of Achilles tendinitis that result in tendon tearing may require surgery to repair.
