Bunions

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe, and occurs when bones in the front part of the foot become dislocated. This causes the big toe to move toward the smaller toes and leads to the joint at the base of your big toe to protrude, leading to friction that results in reddening and soreness of the bunion skin.

Bunions can be caused and worsened due to Ill-fitting shoes or develop due to a foot deformity or a medical condition, such as arthritis.

There are a variety of treatments for bunions including home remedies to reduce the swelling like icing or soaking the affected foot or changing to bigger, more comfortable footwear.

To mitigate or correct a specific bunion condition, the podiatrist may recommend bunion pads or braces, shaving the callus, taking anti-inflammatory drugs, or even bunion surgery.

Custom Orthotics may also be useful in controlling foot function and may reduce symptoms and prevent worsening of the deformity.
